Broken by it, I, too, may be; bow to it I never will. The probability that we may fall in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just; it shall not deter me.
– Abraham Lincoln, from his Speech of the Sub-Treasury (1839), Collected Works 1:178

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
– Harriet Tubman, abolitionist (c.1822-1913)

“It was we, the people, not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union…Men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less.”
– Susan B. Anthony, from her “Speech After Being Convicted of Voting” 1873

“The young women of today, free to study, to speak, to write, to choose their occupation, should remember that every inch of this freedom was bought for them at a great price. It is for them to show their gratitude by helping onward the reforms of their own times, by spreading the light of freedom and of truth still wider. The debt that each generation owes to the past it must pay to the future.”
– Abigail Scott Duniway, suffragist & women’s right advocate (1834-1915)

Historian Timothy Snyder wrote that “The truth on which this country was founded is not that people are perfect, but that they are not. They — we— are vulnerable to those who amass wealth and deploy propaganda. We can be turned against one another. Because we are imperfect, said the founders, we place our trust not in any one person —no kings, no tyrants— but in a system of laws, checks and balances, and civic representation by voting that allows us to live in the dignified understanding that power arises from consent”. Elections & Voting

Get out the Vote

Mobilize supporters to actually vote. Every election matters — local, state, and national. You can make a difference. Write a few postcards at your convenience. Postcards, by encouraging voting, can be just enough extra encouragement to tip the election in the right direction. You can also call, text, or visit friends, encouraging supporters to vote. Learn more here.

Write and Phone Your Legislators

Write letters to your legislators, preferably hand-written which demonstrates extra effort. Well-written letters are a best practice to influence policy. Provide evidence, make clear what matters to you / your community, and suggest solutions.
