Hello Indivisibles,
I want to remind you of the ACLU of VT event tomorrow evening, Tuesday October 27, at 5:30 at the Worthen Library in South Hero. They will be talking about last minute get-out-the-vote, as well as the preparations to defend against the expected Election sabotage from the Trump Administration. It is a Pot Luck, so bring something to share, if you want. You can sign up by email at . Or, I’m sure they will be happy to see you if you just show up. We are planning to bring our popular “Vote Trivia Board” from our NO Kings VoteFest, so if you missed it there, you have another chance tomorrow evening. See you there.
The ACLU is one of the bastions doing the non-stop work of knocking down the illegal and unconstitutional actions of the Trump Administration. Their lawyers are sounding the alarm and filing lawsuits, and their network is alerting the public to these attacks on our democracy and on We The People. They are one of our strongest allies in this struggle to thwart the authoritarian take-over of our government. I’m looking forward to meeting their local representative and learning more about their work. We need as many strong partners as we can find.
A GOOD DAY FOR DEMOCRACY
If you haven’t heard, there is good news today about the fight to preserve democracy around the world. We know that democracy is under attack in multiple countries. But this morning I heard of not one, but two huge wins!!
In Brazil, the democratic leader, Lula Da Silva, who finally ousted the corrupt authoritarian dictator, Bolsonaro, in 2023, won the Presidential race yesterday, to be re-elected President of Brazil. Bolsonaro was a good buddy of Trump and, like Trump, he tried to stage a coup after he lost to Lula in 2023. Unlike Trump, it landed him in prison. Lula’s challenger this year was Bolsonaro’s son (no, really!), who was leading after the first round of voting. But in the run-off election, there was a massive voter turnout, and Lula was victorious. He campaigned on “Democracy Always” and vowed that “dictatorship and fascism will never return to Brazil.”
The people chose democracy and their votes were their strength. In Serbia, the election was nothing short of astounding. For two years, students had been in the streets protesting the corruption and authoritarian rule of the leader, Vucic, and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). The students, not really a political party, this year decided to enlist candidates to the Parliament from all across Serbia. And they forced snap elections. The candidates they recruited were doctors, teachers, etc. The student group became known as the Student List. And they now have the ruling power in Serbia! One of their winning candidates, Radomir Saicic said,
“No force can forever overpower a people who have decided to take their destiny into their own hands”.
If that doesn’t inspire you and give you hope, I can’t imagine what will!
We can fix this. We just have to step up and do the work. Make a call. Send a text. Post on FB. Get out the vote.
Cheers,
Marilyn Lagrow
