Hello Indivisibles,
I don’t know about you, but I have had it. This unnecessary war started by our destroyer-in-chief needs to end. NOW.
It is time to take to the streets. I can’t believe I have to get out and protest yet another war like I did when I was 20 years old. Will they never learn? Is there a pattern here? Why has every Republican President since 1989 felt they had to start a major war? Or sometimes, TWO?
We do not know how this war will end or when. We do not know the full extent of the damage it will do. We do know what has happened so far; thousands dead, including some of our American troops, the Middle East on fire, the worst global energy crisis ever, prices rising here at home.
And the American taxpayer is apparently expected to pay for it all. On top of higher gas prices and higher prices for groceries and consumer goods. The President has asked for an eye-watering amount of money for the Pentagon ($1.5 TRILLION), on top of the $Billions of dollars already spent in just 6 weeks. Nope. Not doing it. We refuse to bankrupt the American people for this.
Except, of course, unless the “fiscally responsible” Republican controlled Congress votes to give away all this money in their next reconciliation bill. They only need 50 votes in the Senate and a majority in the House for this. Unless some Republicans break ranks and say “no”, they will give a blank check to this Administration.
All the while, the oil companies are reaping huge windfall profits. The auto companies are being asked to start making weapons (?!?). Rumors of the return of the draft are swirling because the upper age to join the army is being raised to 42 and registering with the Selective Service will now be automatic. (How old are you, your sons, your grandsons?)
So back to the streets we go. We demand an end to this war. We will have our first End the War Protest tomorrow (Friday, April 17) from 4:00 to 5:00 on the sidewalk between the Worthen Library and Two Heroes.
If you can make an anti-WAR sign, that’s great. If not, come anyway. This is where we start.
One more thing. Many of you know about the “On Tyranny” books that we give out at events. They are written by the amazing Tim Snyder. Tim gave a short speech at a No Kings 3 rally and I thought it was very powerful. This is what we are about. I hope you will take a few minutes to listen to it:
