Hello Indivisibles: Latest Indivisible Champlain Islands Newsletter published. Keep up to date with our actions and get more information on our events.
CANADA: As you may have heard on the news, Trump is once again attacking Canada. Canada is our closest and strongest ally. Or at least it was, until Trump started tearing apart this important relationship. Vermont’s economy depends heavily on trade with Canada; both goods and tourism. So does the rest of our country. But, not satisfied with the damage he has already done, he is once again imposing huge tariffs (50% – paid by Americans, not Canadians) to stifle trade.
He also held up the opening of a beautiful new bridge between Detroit and Canada for weeks. The bridge was paid for by Canada, but some of the tolls would go to the US. Why did he stop the bridge from opening? Because the wealthy Moroun family, which owns the existing bridge to Canada, nearest to the new bridge, did not want the revenue from the tolls on THEIR bridge to decrease. They lobbied heavily against opening the new bridge. And, guess what? They gave a $$$ Million Dollars to a Trump-aligned super PAC. So the new bridge was finished, but not open, for weeks. The bridge finally opened last week.
Indivisible Champlain Islands strongly opposes these attacks on our neighbor, Canada. And we would like to make sure that our Canadian friends and neighbors, tourists and summer residents alike, know that we are as appalled and disgusted as they are. And we want them to know that we value their friendship, their trade, and their trust.
So we are relaunching our “Paired US/Canadian Flag Campaign”. We are encouraging all our members to display small US and Canadian flags in pairs where they will be visible from the road. They can be affixed to the back of a mailbox, added to a flower pot, or whatever creative way you choose. The two flags should be next to each other, or crossed. They should be the same height and size. As you look at the flags from the road, the US flag should be on the left.
We have some flags to give out. You can get them at our Friday “Defend Democracy” protest in South Hero near the Worthen Library from 4:00 to 5:00. We will also be setting up other distribution points. While supplies last. Or, of course, you can get your own flags. If you would like to sponsor the purchase of more flags for us to distribute, you can donate on our Website (IndivisibleCI.org) through ActBlue. If you would like to help us distribute flags to businesses or at Farmer’s Markets, let me know. We would like to see a blizzard of US/Canadian flags side-by-side, as we drive through the Islands!
Remember to come to the Friday “DEFEND DEMOCRACY” Protest. See the attached newsletter for details. Here is a message from Berney and John, leaders of this event:ICI Friday Honk and Wave: Change Happens When People Show Up. Let’s turn out for a big showing at Friday’s Honk and Wave. Let’s face it. We are all horrified at what is going on in our government. Becca is standing up, speaking out and fighting back. Let’s show Becca and our Champlain Islands community as well as the many visitors and commuters who travel through the Islands who we are and what we stand for: “Of the People, By the People, and For the People” –Berney and John
