Hello Indivisibles: Last Wednesday, a 12-year-old child was in immigration court in Chicago. The child was classified as an “unaccompanied minor”, which means they were here alone, without parents or family. The judge was not in the courtroom. He attended via video. This child, and 5 other children, were ordered to be deported, possibly to a country that they had never been to before. Alone. With no parent or guardian or anyone they know. With nothing.
Who will go to Heaven?
Will the judge who ordered the children to be deported?
Will the attorney who pleaded with the judge not to deport the children?
What about the person who reads this, and starts to sob, but does nothing?
Will President Trump, the author of this war on immigrants? He, who is himself the son of an immigrant, married to an immigrant, and whose own son is the son of an immigrant. Will he go?
Who will go to Heaven?
Will the woman who posts on Facebook, “If they came here illegally, deport them. Deport them all. I don’t care who they are.”?
Will the man who reads about this 12 year old child and thinks, “That’s it. I’ve had enough. I have to stop this.” And he picks up the phone and says, “I’m ready. I want to join. Tell me what to do to stop this.” Will he go?
Will the person who reads this and says, “Why do they let them print this? I don’t want to read stuff like this.”?
Who will go to Heaven? Is there a Heaven?
I cannot say.
But I do know that the little child, being sent to a dangerous foreign country all alone, is surely going to a living hell.

A news conference was held after this immigration court hearing on Wednesday Aug. 26th. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley attended part of the hearing and spoke at the news conference. It was reported on PBS affiliate stations and Chicago news outlets.
They outlined that this is a drastic change in how Immigration courts deal with Unaccompanied Minors. They blasted recent cuts to federal programs to support unaccompanied minors, including legal aid, and immigrant advocates. Lawmakers said they want the Trump administration to enforce existing protections. They argue federal statutes explicitly guarantee children access to a lawyer, a fair hearing outside a high-stakes deportation track, and a clear path to release, and other protections.
Change a heart. Change a mind. Change a vote.
Make a call.
